A Brief History

Transgender events to celebrate the struggles and achievements of trans people.Transgender Awareness Month traces back to local efforts to spotlight the achievements and struggles of the transgender community. Over time, November became the designated month as it holds significant meaning, including the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on November 20th. TDOR honors the memory of transgender individuals who lost their lives to violence and hate. We are also provided an opportunity to reflect on the work that remains in the fight for equality. This day of remembrance began in 1999, created by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in honor of Rita Hester. Hester’s unsolved murder remains a tragic symbol of the discrimination and violence many in the community still face.

Observances During November

Transgender Awareness Month coincides with several other significant trans observances:

  • Trans awarenessTransgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) – November 20th, a somber yet powerful tribute to those whose lives were taken by anti-transgender violence.
  • Transgender Week of Awareness – Typically observed in the second week of November, leading up to TDOR, this week promotes visibility and offers educational events, workshops, and forums that foster understanding.

These observances encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to come together. Such observances challenge harmful stereotypes and advocate for meaningful change.
