Transgender Awareness Month traces back to local efforts to spotlight the achievements and struggles of the transgender community. Over time, November became the designated month as it holds significant meaning, including the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on November 20th. TDOR honors the memory of transgender individuals who lost their lives to violence and hate. We are also provided an opportunity to reflect on the work that remains in the fight for equality. This day of remembrance began in 1999, created by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in honor of Rita Hester. Hester’s unsolved murder remains a tragic symbol of the discrimination and violence many in the community still face.

Transgender Awareness Month coincides with several other significant trans observances:
