Observing Black History Month seems especially important given the wave of racism and discrimination we are seeing in the sociopolitical landscape. We love all our members regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, religion, ability, or background.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"BonePageThis February, BonePage celebrates Black History Month and thanks all of our black brothers and sisters for their history, culture and contributions. Black History Month is important as it reminds us of the black people\u2019s strength, experiences and role in the society and in the world at large. Although February is the month dedicated to the great achievements of black people, at BonePage, we celebrate our black brothers and sisters every day of the year.<\/p>\n

The History of Black History Month<\/h2>\n

\"Dr.Recognition of the contributions of black people can be traced back to 1926 when historian Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, who is commonly referred to as the \u201cFather of Black History,\u201d established \u201cNegro History Week.\u201d This observance was purposely scheduled for February because it fell on the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. These historical figures were significant in the struggle against slavery and for civil rights.<\/p>\n

Black History Month was expanded from a week to a month in 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial celebration. Since then, every U.S. president has endorsed the observance. The president sometimes includes a proclamation acknowledging the contributions of black Americans and their place in the nation\u2019s heritage. Other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, have also chosen their own Black History Months, emphasizing the black heritage on the international level.<\/p>\n

The Importance of Recognition<\/h2>\n

Black History Month is not just a celebration; it is a day to think, to learn, to look back and forward. This is why this observation is important as it helps one to face the wrongs of the past, appreciate the fight that has been put in place to end systemic racism and celebrate black people in all fields of life. Black excellence has contributed positively to every aspect of life, including art, literature, science, politics, sports, and activism.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the many contributions of black people is to state that black stories are important. Black contributions are important. And, black lives are important. It is a time to give a voice to those who were supposed to be heard and a time so that future generations can know the whole history of the human kind.<\/p>\n

Contributions Of All Sorts<\/h2>\n

Black people have made a great impact in all aspects of life. Music icons like Louis Armstrong and Aretha Franklin. Innovators like Madam C.J. Walker and George Washington Carver. Politicians like Shirley Chisholm and Barack Obama. Activists like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All these people helped change the world in one way or the other. These are some of the famous people but there are many others who have also made great contributions. Their contributions are evidence of strong will, imagination and optimism.<\/p>\n

Beyond Black History “Month”<\/h2>\n
