Activism kept on increasing over the following decades. The first official Sexual Assault Awareness Month took place in the United States in 2001, and it was coordinated by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). The objective has been the same since then: Educate communities, elevate survivor voices and prevent sexual violence in every way possible.<\/span><\/p>\n Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is not just for women victims. While it\u2019s true that women\u2014especially women of color, transgender women, and women with disabilities\u2014are disproportionately affected by sexual violence, SAAM is for everyone. Sexual assault can and does happen to people of all genders, sexual orientations, ages, races, and backgrounds.<\/p>\n So while the movement historically centered around women\u2019s experiences (especially in its early roots), SAAM now explicitly recognizes and includes all survivors. Advocacy today emphasizes intersectionality, inclusivity, and the understanding that everyone deserves safety, respect, and support.<\/p>\n In today\u2019s world, many connections begin online\u2014and consent applies here just as much as in person. Respecting boundaries in messages, photo sharing, and interactions is essential to maintaining a safe and respectful space.<\/p>\n Unsolicited explicit content, pressuring someone to share images, or continuing communication after someone has said no are all forms of harassment. Sharing private photos or conversations without clear permission is a violation of trust and personal safety.<\/p>\n Everyone deserves control over their own digital presence. Respect, privacy, and clear communication should guide every interaction\u2014on and off the platform. \ud83d\udcf1\ud83d\udd12<\/p>\n Sexual violence thrives in silence. It grows stronger when victims are dismissed, when perpetrators are protected, and when harmful myths, like victim blaming or \u201casking for it,\u201d are not confronted. We believe that together, we can change the culture. This begins with speaking out, reporting violators and supporting people with trauma. Every voice matters. Every action matters.<\/p>\n Staying safe also means knowing when something doesn\u2019t feel right. Trust your instincts\u2014if something feels off, it probably is.<\/p>\n Some warning signs to watch for include:<\/p>\n Your safety always comes first. You never owe anyone your time, attention, or access to your body or personal information. \ud83d\udea8<\/p>\n Learn the signs of sexual harassment and assault. Understand the meaning of consent: it must be clear, enthusiastic, informed, and ongoing. Challenge misinformation and harmful language when you hear it.<\/p>\n Believe them and listen without judgment. Share resources like hotlines, counseling services, or legal aid.<\/p>\n If you witness harassment or inappropriate behavior, don\u2019t stay silent. Use your voice to advocate for safer environments online, in your workplace, and in your community.<\/p>\n Participate in local SAAM events, virtual discussions, or social media campaigns like #SAAM and #BelieveSurvivors.<\/p>\n Donate to or volunteer with organizations such as:<\/p>\n Push for enforcement of existing laws. Support policies that protect victims and ensure due process. Encourage businesses and platforms to adopt zero-tolerance policies.<\/p>\n At BonePage, we believe that consent is sexy\u2014and essential.
